St. Patrick's Day in NYC: Celebrate in the City, Sleep in the Suburbs
The holiday of green, gold, and good beer is fast approaching and if you are looking to join in the festivities, look no further than New York City. There are events happening all weekend from Friday, March 13 until the big day on Tuesday, March 17. There are a number of Irish pubs throughout the city hosting parties, offering specials, and dyeing their drinks all shades of green. Depending on what sort of celebrating you are looking for, there are bar crawls, cultural events, and food markets available to you.
If you are starting your celebration early, the place to be is the Stone Street St. Patrick’s Day Festival. The festival is active from Friday, March 13 until March 17 from noon until 10pm daily. Hosting live Irish bands, traditional bagpipers, DJ sets, and more, the whole street is a party! There are a dozen outdoor bars and food booths available including classic Irish pub food and Guinness.
New York City boasts the largest St. Partick’s Day Parade in the country. The parade starts promptly at 11am on March 17 and travels down 5th Avenue from 44th Street until 79th Street. The route passes in front of iconic St. Patrick’s Cathedral. If you are planning on spectating, it is best to arrive early to claim a spot as around 2 million people attend every year!
There are many cultural experiences happening throughout the city as well. Two of the most well loved are “40 Shades of Green” and the Irish Arts Center Book Day. “40 Shades of Green” is a 6-hour event hosted at the New York Irish Center in Queens where local and international performers take the stage to share dance and music. This is a ticketed event, so be sure to grab yours if you plan to attend. The Irish Arts Center is honoring the country of Ireland’s rich history in literature and poetry by handing out free books across all five boroughs starting at 8am until the books run out. You can check out their website to find out where their booths and tables will be located.
After a day of celebrating your Irish luck, come back to the suburbs to sleep soundly in the calm and quiet of The DeBary Inn! We still have bookings available for the weekend and weekdays leading up to St. Patrick’s day, but they are going fast, so book your reservation today!
